There are STILL D&D Open Championships run at GenCon every year!
I participated in last years’ with the release of 4e and made it to the semi-finals (though the rest of the team couldn’t make it and we forfeit).
It is team based now, and you are scored on how far you get, how many people die, and what loot you recover.
