This year’s nominees for the Indie RPG Awards have been announced and the list is pretty interesting. My personal picks from the list are below, although there are at least another three or four games on the list that also are worthy of winning:
- Mouse Guard
- 3:16
- Houses of the Blooded
- In a Wicked Age
- Zombie Cinema

I’ve never played Zombie Cinema. I’ll trust you if you say its worthy. My list would look like:
• Houses of the Blooded
• 3:16
• Mouse Guard
• Sweet Agatha
• Sufficiently Advanced
• It’s Complicated
I find its interesting that both Awesome Adventures and Starblazer Adventures got onto the list – both games which contain over 85% of the text of Spirit of the Century.
But there are many games on the list that I haven’t played and they may be astounding. There are others I know are astounding but I don’t feel deserve to win due to the quality of the competition. Its a tough field. Finally there’s at least one game on the list which in my opinion doesn’t deserve to be in the running – its not in the same league as many of the games on that list. Maybe I missed something when I attempted to read it because someone obviously likes it.

Yeah, there are a couple of games on the list that make me scratch my head.
Regarding Awesome Adventures, which I own, is fine but contains virtually nothing new over the Fate SRD – it simply deletes/simplifies a few rules, and restates the rules. It also is badly in need of an editor because the book contains a lot of typos, grammar problems, and poorly worded explanations.
I don’t own SBA and ended up passing on it because of its sheer size – it seems like they dumped everything and the kitchen sink into it and I’m baffled as to why the pdf version was formated for digest size giving it a ridiculously high page count – it’s impossible to print or bind efficiently.
A few of the other games on the list are not what I consider good games but that’s just my opinion.

3:16 is a good game, and Mouse Guard is an awesome book (even if I do not like the system), but other than that, I have not taken a look at the other games. SO I would have to throw my votes to them.

You really need to play Mouse Guard (and Burning Wheel) a bit to appreciate the system – Burning Wheel was one of those games I just didn’t “get” until we started playing it and everything clicked in to place. Multiple players in my group had the same experience.

Yeah I have heard that from numerous people. Maybe some day…
But I also have to say that a system that has that steep of a learning curve, or one that requires that much thought process is simply put, not a game for me. Hell, these days I think Savage Worlds is too crunchy for me!

Well there are lower crunch games than Savage Worlds. I’d suggest Amber, or Risus

With the news about Mouse Guard reaching every corner of the Earth (I’m from Brasil btw), do you plan on finishing the MG sheet for Fantasy Grounds? Or is it finished and I’m just not aware?

It’s almost done but I haven’t had time lately to finish it – the problem is that there are a lot of small bugs and fiddly bits that need ironing out and it’s a major PITA to do it. However, I have a “working” ruleset and would be happy to send you a copy if you send me your address (you can use the Contact Me function to avoid releasing your email to the spambots).
